Aves de la parte baja del Río Sinú, Caribe colombiano; inventario y ampliaciones de distribución OceanDocs
Estela, F.A.; López-Victoria, M..
Knowledge of the geographical distribution of the birds in the Colombian Caribbean is still meager. Coastal wetlands are among the less studied environments in the area and one of the most important for their high bird richness. Since 1998, inventories and monitoring of the bird populations of the lower part of the Sinú river have been made. Until July 2005, 296 bird species have been recorded for the area, 41 of which are new for this part of the Caribbean; in addition, new wintering localities were noted for eight migratory species. Breeding records were obtained for 98 species. Three species are threatened at some level and six have a restricted geographic distribution. New records for the area are explained in terms of the limited previous knowledge of...

Caracteristiques du stock de saumon atlantique (Salmo salar L.) capture a la ligne sur l'Aulne (riviere de Bretagne nord) durant la periode 1983-1981. ArchiMer
Prouzet, Patrick.
Study of fish caught by angling on the Aulne River from 1973 to 1981provides information on the characteristics of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) populations and on the characteristics of the fishery. A discontinuity was noted in 1973 in the catch evolution that separates two periods: 1955-1972 (630 salmons each year) and 1973-1981 (161 salmons each years).

Characteristics of one sea winter Atlantic salmon stock caught on Elorn river from 1974 to 1984 ArchiMer
Prouzet, Patrick; Gaignon, Jean-louis.
From observations gathered on grilse populations sampled during the fishing period (March -mid-June) or after the fishing season, the authors noted: a strong heterogeneity and length, the mean value of which increase from May to December, a sex-ratio not different from 1 male for 1 female, a high relative fecundity superior to those of spring salmon population sampled. The comparison between fish of local and foreign origins did not allow to observe significant differences between the biological characteristics studied (weight, length, sex-ratio and fecundity).

Coastal migratory connections of humpback whales, Megaptera Novaeangliae Borowski, 1871, southern Chile OceanDocs
Galleti, Bárbara; Capella, Juan; Gibbons, Jorge; Cabrera, Elsa.
There is not published information on a comparative analysis about interchange of individual humpback whales between coastal areas of aggregation of the species along southern Chilean coast. Here we present a comparison of individually photo-identified humpback whales obtained off northwestern Chiloé Island, in Patagonian and Fuegian fjords and in the Strait of Magellan near Carlos III Island , to discover movements and interchange of individuals. Comparison of photographs resulted in conclusive matches of four individuals within the four study locations: two whales from Canal Wide (49°55’S, 74°30’W), one whale from Canal Cockburn (54°18’S, 72°15’W) and a mother-calf pair off northwestern Chiloé Island matched whales found near Carlos III. The minimum...

Do FADs influence the geographical distribution of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus)? ArchiMer
Taquet, Marc; Reynal, Lionel; Laurans, Martial.
For most fisheries, increasing the local production of pelagic fish is the main objective of Fish Aggregating Devices (fads). This does not rule out the existence of a larger-scale impact, especially on the migratory behaviour of fish. The analysis of data collected during 25 experimental fishing surveys around Martinique between 1995 and 1997 has led to the hypothesis that fads influence the migratory behaviour of young dolphinfish. Unlike recent studies of dolphinfish migration in the Caribbean, which tend to show an annual migration pattern with a seasonal passage through the French West Indies, the experimental fishing surveys done over more than a year on a monthly basis on a single cohort, show that the migratory pattern of part of the regional stock...

Effects of land use changes on bird composition along River Njoro: A watershed of Lake Nakuru OceanDocs
Shivoga, W.A.; Ngugi, F.M.; Muchiri, M.S.; Miller, S.N..
The rift valley lakes and their associated watersheds are home for millions of resident and migratory waterfowl. However, they have been recently challenged by land use changes. Lake Nakuru (Kenya) supports diverse biological resources of global, regional and national importance. It is saline and River Njoro is its main source of freshwater. Deforestation, cultivation and urbanization in vital watershed areas have altered the hydrological regime of River Njoro. There is need to preserve and restore aquatic, riparian and terrestrial biological diversity in the watershed to be able to restore and maintain ecological health of Lake Nakuru. The impact of these recent land use changes on birds in the River Njoro Watershed is of concern to conservationists. This...

Fish passage post-construction issues: analysis of distribution, attraction and passage efficiency metrics at the Baguari Dam fish ladder to approach the problem Neotropical Ichthyology
Silva,Luiz Gustavo Martins da; Nogueira,Lorena Bettinelli; Maia,Bruno Pereira; Resende,Lucas Borges de.
Fish passages are considered the oldest management tool used to minimize the impact of blocking fish migratory routes by hydroelectric power plants. However, fish passages are being installed without specific criteria in Brazil, with severe consequences to the conservation of the local fish fauna. Therefore, basic data gathered for fish passages already constructed could contribute to define operational rules, in addition to offer subsidies to decision-making and design of future facilities. Thus, the fish ladder of Baguari Dam was evaluated regarding temporal distribution, attraction, and ascension of the local fish fauna. A total of 20 fish samples were conducted immediately downstream of the dam and inside the fish ladder, from January 2010 to June...

Tackling the motivation to monitor: success and sustainability of a participatory monitoring program Ecology and Society
Singh, Navinder J.; Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences; navinder.singh@slu.se; Danell, Kjell; ; kjell.danell@slu.se; Edenius, Lars; ; lars.edenius@slu.se.
Monitoring of species and their ecosystem attributes is a fundamental requirement in applied ecology and conservation. However, landscape scale monitoring requires an immense effort and commitment, especially when species have a wide distribution or are migratory in nature. Participatory monitoring, whereby local communities are engaged, is increasingly being proposed to address landscape scale monitoring. Its implementation is met with many challenges related to finances, motivation of the local people, lack of trained manpower, and nondirect legal use of the species in question. It is of interest to determine what makes a participatory monitoring program interesting for locals to ensure their long term engagement. Using the unique 26-year program of...

Variation in the structure of the ichthyoplankton community in the lower Paraíba do Sul River Neotropical Ichthyology
Teixeira,Gabriel E.; Bialetzki,Andréa; Soares,Bruno E.; Souza,Guilherme; Caramaschi,Érica P..
ABSTRACT The Paraíba do Sul River is affected by extensive water collection for supply, organic and industrial pollution, and dams. Nonetheless, the ichthyofauna maintains biodiversity and sustains artisanal fisheries. This study analyzes the composition, abundance and distribution of fish larvae, an important approach to determine the reproductive period and spawning sites. The sampling occurred from August 2011 through February 2013 in five sites at a transect between the banks on the lower reach of the Paraíba do Sul River. A total of 5,412 larvae belonging to 20 taxa was captured. The predominant order was Characiformes. Larvae of Prochilodus spp. and Leporinus spp. were the most abundant; larvae of Brycon insignis, an endangered species, were present....
